Statistics Norway started in 1991 a series of surveys on culture and media on behalf of the Norwegian Council of Culture, Ministry of Culture and the Research Council. The surveys were restored on the initiative including from the coordinating committee for cultural statistics, such as the Norwegian Council for Cultural Affairs has taken the initiative and how the Norwegian Research Council is represented. The information is collected using a questionnaire four times a year. The surveys provide information on the use of / participation in radio, television, newspapers, magazines, books, cinema, theater, concerts, exhibitions, associations, religious communities and sports. This can be analyzed against information about the family situation, education, employment and income, political sympathies, values and trust in social institutions.
