The invention relates to an apparatus for measuring a lignified growth， wherein the apparatus comprises a first optical sensor. The invention also relates to an associated method. The problem addressed by the invention is that of specifying an improved method and an improved apparatus which can be used to avoid errors in the assignment of the data and to save time. This problem is solved， according to the invention， by virtue of the fact that the apparatus has a separating device on which the first optical sensor is arranged with respect to the cutting edge of the separating device in such a manner that it is possible to measure the growth rings during cutting.
