Ion Beam-Induced Mutagenesis and Genomic Analysis in Japanese Gentian

To expand the limited genetic resources available for gentian breeding, we developed an efficient regeneration-based method for ion beam-induced mutagenesis in the gentian hybrid cultivar Albireo (Gentiana scabra Ã? Gentiana triflora). Carbon and neon ion irradiation were tested, and callus formation and shoot regeneration were induced from leaf tissues. Among approximately 200 regenerated plants, two double-flowered mutants were identified following neon ion irradiation at 9 Gy and 12 Gy. This study aims to provide a promising approach for generating novel floral traits in gentian through whole-genome analysis of these mutants.
