WORLD Protection from Gender Discrimination at Work, Africa 2000-2023

The WORLD Policy Analysis Center (WORLD) is committed to improving the quantity and quality of globally comparative data available to policymakers, citizens, civil society, and researchers on laws and policies that work to support human rights, including economic opportunity, social and civic engagement, human health, development, well-being, and equity. The WORLD Education, Africa 1990-2021 was released in partnership with DataFirst. This data was created to use harmonized DHS and MICS surveys to assess the impact of policy change on early childhood outcomes, gender equality, and economic outcomes. Longitudinal data was constructed for more than 20 years on laws prohibiting gender, marital status, pregnancy, maternal status, and paternal status at work. For each status, prohibitions were assessed for discrimination in hiring, training, promotions and/or demotions, pay, and terminations, as well as measures to support effective implementation, such as employer responsibility to prevent discrimination, prohibitions of all forms of retaliation for reporting discrimination, and prohibitions of retaliation for participating in investigations.
