Age-related changes in visual performance: a defocus curve study in healthy phakic eyes

This repository contains the visual acuity (VA) measurements from the clinical trial reported in the paper Age-related changes in visual performance: a defocus curve study in healthy phakic eyes (available at https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0343521). The study investigated how visual performance changes with age by analyzing monocular defocus curves across a wide age range (20–65 years) in healthy eyes. The participants were divided into seven age groups, and VA was measured at different defocus levels. Key visual performance metrics were extracted — baseline VA, curve slope, area under the curve (AUC), and negative defocus cut-off point — and analyzed using statistical models. Clinical trial dataset VA was measured in the dominant eye of 105 healthy participants at different defocus levels, ranging from -3.00 D to +1.00 D in 0.50 D steps. Besides the VA measurements, the dataset also includes information on participants’ age and gender, whether the eye measured is left or right, and whether it is dominant or not. Here is a description of each column in the dataset: E – Age of the participant in years. G – Gender of the participant: M for male, F for female. Ojo – Eye measured: OD for right eye, OI for left eye. Ojo_d_VL – Indicates whether the eye is dominant for distance vision (SI) or not (NO). AV -3, AV -2.5, …, AV 1 – VA measurements at each defocus level from -3.00 D to +1.00 D in 0.50 D steps. For example, AV -3 contains the VA measured with a -3 D defocus.
