Association of vaginal bacteria with risk of Trichomonas vaginalis acquisition

This case-control study of 25 cases and 50 controls addresses the relationship between the vaginal microbiota and Trichomonas vaginalis acquisition in women from Mombasa, Kenya. A sequential approach was used to identify bacteria associated with increased risk of T. vaginalis infection. We generated broad-range PCR and deep sequencing data by targeting the V3V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. Relative abundance of bacterial taxa were analyzed and bacterial species of interest were quantified by targeted species-specific PCR.
