Use Case 4: Leveraging HydroShare to Process, Analyze, and Share Atmospheric River Event Metrics from CESM2 Large Ensemble

This use case explores the capabilities of the CESM2 Large Ensemble (LENS) in capturing the intensity and frequency of atmospheric river (AR) events. By applying AR classification methods (as outlined in Ralph et al., 2019), we categorize events by intensity and duration to assess historical variability and future risk scenarios relevant to emergency planning. To enable scalable analysis and FAIR data sharing, we convert large NetCDF datasets into Zarr format, hosted and published via HydroShare. This allows users to either reproduce the AR analysis using our shared notebooks and utilities or adapt the workflow to new ensemble members or future climate runs. HydroShare’s cloud-optimized ecosystem ensures that derived products remain accessible, reusable, and actionable across the hydrologic and climate science communities.
