Tuning the magnetic properties of tetragonal CuO and Co doped by strain

Our aim is to grow tetragonal CuO and CoxCu1-xO films in coherent epitaxy on substrates of increasing lattice constant (from LaAlO3 to MgO) and to study their structure, thanks to the unique characteristics of the INS2- BM32 beamline which couples the capability of elaborating such kind of films by oxygen-plasma-assisted MBE with the investigation of ultrathin films by GIXRD. Tetragonal CuO films are supposed to exhibit a high strain-dependent Néel temperature. Doping with magnetic ions like e.g. cobalt could result in room temperature semiconductors, with applications in spintronics. The structure of these thin films will be studied as a function of the Co concentration.
