Santiagoside, the first Asterosaponin from an Antarctic Starfish (Neosmilaster georgianus).

A new asterosaponin, named santiagoside, has been isolated from the Antarctic starfish Neosmilaster georgianus and, its structure elucidated on the basic of extensive spectroscopic experiments and chemical correlations. Santiagoside is the first asrterosaponin possessing a tetrasaccharide sugar chain and a 1,4-disubstituted glucose unit.
