Major element spinel-group mineral chemistry: global dataset of ultramafic rocks from komatiites, layered intrusions and ophiolitic mantle

This dataset comprises 2457 major element spot analyses of spinel-group minerals from 48 ultramafic samples. Samples are representative of the following geologic/tectonic environments: the residual mantle portion of ophiolites; komatiites; continental layered intrusions; and high-grade (granulite-facies) metamorphism. Ophiolite samples are from Semail, Oman (n=4); Baltimore, USA (n=5); and Leka, Norway (n=4). Komatiite samples are from Komati, South Africa (n=3); Munro, Canada (n=5); Gorgona Island, Colombia (n=3); and Morro do Onça, Brazil (n=12). Layered intrusion samples are from: Modderfontein, South Africa (n=2); Loch Mhorsgail, UK (n=5); and Maaruig, UK (n=4). The samples representing granulite-facies metamorphism are from Ben Strome, UK (n=2). All analyses were collected in the JEOL 8900 electron microprobe in the Department of Mineral Sciences at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
