Stomata evolved as plants transitioned from water to land to enable carbon dioxide uptake and water loss to be controlled. In angiosperms stomata actively close in response to drought. Reports of mechanisms underlying stomatal closure in lycophytes and ferns have been contradictory, possibly due to the recently discovered conditional sensitisation of stomata to humidity in ferns. Transcriptomes from whole fronds of the fern C. richardii were captured under multiple environmental conditions and stomatal closure states to isolate transcriptional changes associated with stomatal closure and sensitisation to humidity.
