The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is a key biological system required for reproduction and associated sexual behaviors to occur. Each of these tissues, the hypothalamus in the brain, the pituitary gland, and the gonads (testes and ovaries), has specialized functions to promote reproductive processes. To gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes each part of the HPG axis, we characterized patterns of gene expression in male and female rock dove hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonads. Here, we report the first vertebrate HPG transcriptome. These data have the potential to be used to further investigate how each tissue functions, and how changes in normal gene activity may reflect or contribute to reproductive disorders and disease.
