Marine sediment from the coast of sub-arctic Greenland was incubated with 13C-labelled cyanobacterial macromolecules, i.e., proteins and lipids, under in situ conditions (0°C and no oxygen). DNA stable isotope probing was used to identify the microorganisms that are responsible for protein and lipid degradation.
