Global change drives trade-offs between climate benefits and multifunctionality in global wetlands

Wetlands provide multiple, often interdependent ecosystem functions. Actions aimed at one benefit can inadvertently compromise others; however, the magnitude and direction of such trade-offs at a global scale remain poorly understood. We synthesize 203 effect sizes associated with 5336 primary observations of ecosystem variables to evaluate how wetland ecosystem functions simultaneously respond to four major global change drivers: warming, elevated CO2, and nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment.
