We analyzed forty-two (42) samples from twenty-one (n=21) S. aureus infected DFU patients who underwent surgical debridement/treatment. Infection status was clinically determined based on the assessment of twelve signs and symptoms. Wound healing status (size), presence of infection such as purulent exudate, erythema, pain, or offensive odor were documented at 0-week and at 8-week after initiation of therapy. Analysis of our results were based on comparison between two groups: (Group 1) the genes expression as seen in healed patients (n=17) at 0-week vs 8-week follow-up after antibiotics therapy; and (Group 2) the genes expression as seen in healed patients (n=17) vs not-healed patients (n=3) at 8-week after antibiotics therapy. One sample (n=1) was contaminated and was excluded from further analysis. Overall, we wanted to investigate if transcriptome could be used as a tool to diagnose infected DFU.
