Global oil palm expansion 2001-2024

This repository contains a 10-m global oil palm extent layer for 2024, old-growth forest loss and oil palm planting year layer for 2001-2015 and yearly from 2016 to 2024. The repository contains the following data: - Grid_OPExpansion_2001-2024.shp: shapefile that delineates the 650 grid cells of 100 x 100 km where oil palm was found. - Validation_LandCoverChange_8classes.xlsx: excel file with the calculations for the validation of the land cover change classes. - Validation_stratified_accuracy_8strata_3classes_TTM2024.xlsx: excel file with the calculations for the validation of the oil palm extent 2024. - Global_OPExpansion_2001-2024.zip: 650 raster tiles of 100x100 km in geotiff format. Raster values have the format ABFFYY with the following information: CODE Description Values A Oil palm plantation type in 2024 1 = Industrial 2 = Smallholder B Primary forest in 2000 0 = Non-forest 1 = Forest FF Forest loss year (only when B=1) 2015 = Forest loss in 2015 or before 20XX = Forest loss in year 20XX (where XX takes values from 16 to 24) YY Planting year 2015 = Planting year in 2015 or before 20XX = Planting year in year 20XX (where XX takes values from 16 to 24) Examples: 111718 = Old growth forest in 2000 cleared in 2017 and planted with industrial oil palm in 2018 200015 = Non-forest planted with smallholder oil palm in 2015 or before The dataset can be visualized at https://ee-globaloilpalm.projects.earthengine.app/view/global-oil-palm-expansion-2001-2024. This Google Earth Engine script allows for the inspection of Landsat time series and the visualization of historical satellite images for a given oil palm plantation.
