VPRS 18865 Register of Applications for Outdoor Relief

This series comprises volumes of registers recording applications for outdoor relief. The Bendigo Gold District Hospital (VA 1264) provided for the support of outdoor patients who were in destitute circumstances. In order to receive support, applicants were required to obtain a written certificate from an annual or life governor of the hospital. The person responsible for signing the certificate was expected to ensure that the applicant was in destitute circumstances. Applications were to be received by 2:30pm on Tuesday each week when the hospital Visiting Committee would decide on each case as part of the business of their weekly meeting. The registers record receipt of applications and the decision of the Visiting Committee, as well as names and residences of applicants, details of the hospital official making the applicant’s recommendation and any relevant remarks.
