Dunster High Street Oak Doorway and Window

Dig Village, Dunster, May 2018 The Oval, High Street Approached from a corridor from the street off to the right, this oak doorway and unglazed window frame is situated perpendicular to the street. It is very much an internal structure now, but once, you would have stepped 'outside' then back in, rather like an outside building. The floor level inside is lower than anywhere else in the house. Sometimes called a Carnaervon Arch, though usually only when made of stone, this is a shoulder-headed arch, formed by two jowled posts and a lintel, with an adjoining unglazed window with chamfered timber mullions or stanchions. Dendrochronology has been attempted, and a date is hopefully forthcoming. It's probably C15th, but could be earlier. The starting view faces south as you 'step in' to the room, which would have been used for the dirtier and messier fuinctions necessary to the household. The frame can be viewed from both sides.
