Marine Lake Grevelingen is located in the southwestern part of the Netherlands and has a limited exchange of saline water with the North Sea. The deepest part of the lake is anaerobic with high organic matter content. Constant deposition and biodegradation of organic matter have resulted in methane rich anoxic sediments which combined with sulphate from sea water renders this site a potential niche for anaerobic oxidation of methane. So the main objective of this study is to characterise the sediment microbial community including anaerobic methanotrophs.
