KPB Anadromous Waters Habitat Protection

The Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB) established a 50-foot Habitat Protection District for the Kenai River in 1996. In January of 2012, additional anadromous streams (those on the west side of the Cook Inlet, to include Kalgin Island) were included in the ordinance. On January 1, 2013, all anadromous streams within the KPB (excluding those within the Seward-Bear Creek Flood Service Area) were protected by the Habitat Protection District. The Alaska Department of Fish and Fame (ADF&G) maintains the “Atlas and Catalog of Waters Important for Spawning, Rearing, or Migration of Anadromouse Fish” (Catalog), and makes annual additions and deletions based on data observed in the field. In 2014, KPB opted to maintain its own list of anadramous waters, known as the KPB 21.18 Appendix, which is categorized into three geographical districts: South, West, and North. The KPB Planning Department River Center Division reviews ADF&G's additions and deletions to the Catalog every three years and presents those changes to the KPB Assembly as proposed amendments to KPB 21.18.
