Mangroves are one of the most efficient ecosystems for carbon sequestration. We map the global mangrove restoration potential, showing that there may be 156,682 km2 of mangrove restoration in the current climate, taking into account socioeconomic and ecological land-use constraints. However, mangrove restoration is a slow process and will be affected by climate change. We estimate that, under a business-as-usual scenario, only 19,361 km2 of currently restorable mangrove areas fall within pixels exhibiting upward trends in future cover potential. Based on the prediction of mangrove natural regeneration potential, we divide the restoration potential into 73,969 km2 achievable through natural regeneration and 82,713 km2 requiring active plantation efforts. This means that the current global additional carbon sequestration potential of mangrove restoration is 8.514 GtC.
