The aim of this study is to do whole genome sequencing of individual oak trees from Wytham Woods and the Blenheim Estate, in Oxfordshire, through the Darwin Tree of Life (DToL) project, to create a platform for studies of the historical genetics, ecology & disease-resistance of this key species. The sampled individuals are from Wytham Woods, a DToL site that has already provided the voucher specimen for this species for the DToL, and veteran oak trees from the Blenheim Estate in Oxfordshire. The latter site, a remnant of the medieval Wychwood Forest, has the highest density of ancient oaks (>400 years) known in Europe, including some up to 1000 year old individuals. The former site (Wytham) has been a site of ecological research into the phenology of oaks and associated insects since the 1950s. The position of all 5700 oaks in Wytham are mapped and associated data on phenology, phenotype and insect abundance known from multiple years for a sample of 200 trees from which samples will be selected to maximise spatial coverage This data is part of a pre-publication release.
