Oral Vaccination Reduces the Effects of Lawsonia intracellularis Challenge on the Swine Small and Large Intestine Microbiome

This study evaluated changes to the microbiome by 16S rRNA gene analysis of the ileal mucosa, ileal digesta, cecal digesta and feces of pigs subsequent to challenge with Lawsonia intracellularis and to an oral live vaccine against L. intracellularis. A gut homogenate model was used for L. intracellularis challenge and different timepoints were evaluated to gain a better understanding of the different stages of infection.
