Decriminalized abortions performed in Brazil from January 2016 to October 2020 cost the country's health system around two million Brazilian reals. The health expenditure caused by procedures following unsuccessful or incomplete abortions, on the other hand, amounted to 189 million reals in the same period. This means that for every 100 reals spent on abortion allowed by law, Brazil's health system bears the cost of 9,500 reals in post-procedures of abortions gone wrong. In Brazil, abortion is decriminalized in three cases: if the pregnancy is a result of rape, if performing an abortion is the only way to save the woman's life, or if the fetus suffers from anencephaly.
