Sea ice duration is defined as the time elapse between day of advance and day of retreat within a given sea ice year, which begins mid-February (mean minimum of summer sea ice extent for the Southern Ocean) and ends the following mid-February. See Stammerjohn et al (2008, JGR) for further details. Different satellite algorithms exist.
