Whole genome sequence of fungal strain, Aspergillus terreus (a soil fungus) was carried out to check and compare the presence of lovastatin biosynthetic gene cluster (AF141924.1& AF141925.1). Lovastatin is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGR) in cholesterol biosynthetic pathway and hence used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Our preliminary results revealed that Aspergillus terreus of soil origin produce copious amount of lovastatin. The analysis of whole genome of A. terreus (KM017963), a soil isolate, revealed the presence of lovastatin gene cluster.
