Maternal vaginal and saliva samples, and infant saliva and gut samples were collected throughout the perinatal period to evaluate birth and pregnancy factors that influence the microbiota. Total DNA was extracted from the samples with the Qiagen DNeasy powersoil kit, the 16S V4 region was PCR amplified, and amplicons were sequenced with Illumina MiSeq.
