VPRS 8084 Register of Appeals to County Court, Melbourne

This series comprises the Registers of Appeal cases heard in the County Court, Melbourne.Under Section 178, Part VIII of the Justices Act 1890, the justice/chairman of a Court of General Sessions was empowered to hear appeals from Courts of Petty Sessions. Those persons appealing against convictions or sentences were doing so under the provisions of section 127, Part VI of the Justices Act 1890.The Criminal Law Branch of the Office of the Victorian Government Solicitor (previously known as the Office of the Crown Solicitor) (VA 667) was responsible for the preparation, administration and prosecution of criminal cases on behalf of the Crown. The administration of appeal cases was a function of the Criminal Law Branch. This series was maintained by the Melbourne Appeals Section of the Criminal Law Branch and concerned only those appeals heard at the Court of General Sessions, Melbourne (known as County Court, Melbourne after 1968). The series functioned as a control record for the Melbourne Appeal Files which have been destroyed up to 1983.
