Our study represents a collaborative effort between Colorado State University (CSU) and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) Precipitation Research Facility located at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia, during the winter of 2021-2022. Its coastal mid-latitude location, at the northern end of Virginia's Eastern Shore, places WFF within a unique ecosystem making it an attractive location for studying East Coast Winter Storms. These storms can be devastating producing large amounts of snowfall, freezing rain, sleet and resultant flooding. Our study focuses on January 29, 2022 as it offers a working comprehensive dataset from multiple instruments with good quality data, including Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera (MASC), Two-Dimensional Video Disdrometers (2DVDs) and 3D Sonic Anemometers. The experimental setup at the site featured a Snowflake Measurement and Analysis System (SMAS), MASC, and 2DVD positioned within the sheltered environment of the Double Fence Intercomparison Reference (DFIR), protecting the instruments from strong, turbulent winds. An additional 2DVD was located outside the fence to facilitate comparative analysis. Furthermore, two 3D sonic anemometers were strategically placed inside and outside the fence, enabling a comprehensive comparison of wind measurements to facilitate the comparison of relationships (velocity-apparent diameter, area ratio-apparent diameter, density-apparent diameter) to aid our hypothesis of the absolute requirement for a wind fence (DFIR) or low wind speeds to get acceptable and usable results. The dataset includes the first 8 hours of January 29, 2022 from both 3D Sonic Anemometer data inside (CSAT1) and outside (CSAT2), the raw data from the 2DVDs both inside (SN37) and outside (SN35), and the All-in-one weather station (AIO) data for the whole day.
