A comparative characterization of tapeworms mitogenomes with emphasis on the family Rhinebothriidae

This project used a combination of methods to obtain low cost/large scale molecular data from High-Throughput Sequencing (published by Trevisan et al., 2019) to obtain 86 new complete mitogenomes of cestodes parasites of elasmobranchs from 5 orders: Rhinebotrhiidea; Phyllobothriidea; Onchoproteocephalidea; Tetraphyllidea and Trypanorhyncha. The mitogenomes presented here represent an increase of 41% of the mitogenomes available for cestodes and also 33% of the cestode orders (6 to 8 orders). The characterization of mitochondrial genomes of new specimens, including from the family Rhinebothriidae is the first step to provide a useful resource for future studies on the evolutionary relationships of parasites.
