Motorization and Its Consequences: A Mixed-Methods Study on the Epidemiology, Impact, and Stakeholder Perspectives of Road Traffic Injuries Among Undergraduate Two-Wheeler Riding Students in Nepal

This mixed‑method study investigated the burden of road traffic injuries (RTIs) among undergraduate students in Kathmandu, Nepal. Quantitative data were collected from 1,217 students aged 17–31 years across four colleges, complemented by five key informant interviews for qualitative insights. The prevalence of RTIs during 2021–2022 was found to be 23%, with bruises to the upper and lower limbs being the most common injuries. Notably, only 78% of respondents possessed a driving license, and injuries were associated with academic disruption and financial strain due to healthcare and vehicle repair costs. The qualitative analysis yielded five stakeholder‑driven recommendations aimed at reducing RTIs, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions to improve road safety and mitigate the impact of injuries on young populations in Nepal.
