At-vessel mortality data for demersal chondrichthyans captured in Mediterranean commercial trawl fisheries

This dataset contains at-vessel mortality and health condition data for demersal chondrichthyans captured in Mediterranean commercial trawl fisheries. It was collected during the project ECEME and used to calculate AVM rates and overall health condition for the captured species. We also assessed the intrinsec and extrinsic drivers of mortality and health condition using GAMMs. The dataset also contains the information on the drivers included. In detail:Haul_N: ID number of the particular tow sampled.

Vessel: ID number for the vessel on which sampling occurred.

Metier: Operating metier of such particular vessel at that particular tow. 

Species: Scientific name of the species assessed abbreviated as the genus initial and species name.

Alive_Dead: Alive == 1; Dead == 0, assessed at the time of release. 

Activity: Assessed accordingly to the description on the scientific article using four categories (0, 0.33, 0,66, 1).

Wunds: Assessed accordingly to the description on the scientific article using four categories (0, 0.33, 0,66, 1).

Bruising: Assessed accordingly to the description on the scientific article using four categories (0, 0.33, 0,66, 1). 

Health_prob: Assessed accordingly to the description on the scientific based on the product of the three subindices (activity, wunds, and bruising).

deckTime: Time the specimen was exposed on deck before assessment and subsequent release (mins).

depth: Mean depth of the particular tow sampled (m).

bodyMass: Estimated body mass of the particular specimen (g).

atmosphericTemperature: Atmospheric temperature at the location where the tow occurred (ºC). 

towDuration: duration of the towing period (h).

Pregnancy: pregnancy status assessed for S. canicula and G. melastomus (rest of the species == NA) mature females (rest of specimens == NA), with value == 1 for pregnant females and == 0 for non-pregnant females. 

Abortion: abortion observation on deck for observed pregnant females with values == 0 indicating no abotion and == 1 indicating abortion.

seaState: state of the sea measured under Douglas scale. 

windStength: wind strength measured using the Beaufort scale

cloudCover: measured using the Oktas scale and transformed to percentages.

dateTme: Date and time when the catch was exposed on deck.
