Using a staphylococci-targeted sequencing approach, the nasal “staphylome” could be grouped into sCSTs that reflect previously reported S. aureus carriage rates, while providing additional information on co-occurring species. This paves the way for future targeted investigation of S. aureus antagonists. The high temporal stability of certain sCSTs indicates differences in species competitiveness to achieve persistent colonisation. Importantly, we showed that sCSTs are comparable across cohorts from two countries.
