The Ground Water Atlas of the United States is published by the U.S. Geological
Survey (USGS, "http://www.usgs.gov"). This Atlas, prepared as an outgrowth of
the Regional Aquifer System Analysis program of the USGS describes the
location, extents, and geologic and hydrologic characteristics of all the
important aquifers in the United States. The Atlas explains technical terms in
siple language and clearly illustrates the principles that govern occurrence
and movement of ground water in different geologic and topographic settings.
Therefore, it is useful not only to hydrologists, but also to planners,
lawmakers, teachers or anyone who needs to understand the occurrence, movement,
and quality of groundwater.
The Ground Water Atlas consists of 14 chapters, 13 of which describe the ground
water resources of different regions of the U.S., the remaining chapter
contains introductory material and the Nationwide aquifer map. Each chapter
contains an overview of climatic, geologic, and hydrologic conditions
throughout the regional area, shown primarily by maps supplemented by charts,
cross sections, and diagrams. Discussions of each principle aquifer in each
regional area are accompanied by a variety of illustrations.
