VPRS 4663 Register Of Day Labour Accounts

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).In the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, Road Engineers needed to employ day labour as chainmen and labourers as well as permanent work forces. This series records the claims made by Road Engineers for the funds necessary to pay this labour. Details include the date of registry, the contract number, the nature of the claim and the name of the claimant, how it was dealt with (referring to the account used for payment), the amount and the date of the payment.
