GHG emissions from the production of ammonia in international shipping 2022

A typical process of ammonia production—called grey ammonia—resulted in a relatively high amount of GHG emissions in 2022. Around 149.5 grams of CO₂ equivalent were emitted per megajoule generated during the grey ammonia production process. With the use of better technology relying on CO₂ capture and storage, the process of ammonia production can be improved, resulting in the production of blue ammonia. The production of blue ammonia generates only about 16 grams of CO₂ equivalent per megajoule produced.
