Replication Package for: Ideological Institutionalization in Authoritarian China: A Three-Layer Corpus-Based Analysis of the Expansion of Schools of Marxism

This repository contains the full replication materials for the study Ideological Institutionalization in Authoritarian China: A Three-Layer Corpus-Based Analysis of the Expansion of Schools of Marxism, which examines how ideological authority is institutionalized through bureaucratic and organizational processes in China’s higher education system. The project reconstructs ideological governance as a multi-layered institutional mechanism linking leadership discourse, ministerial regulation, and university-level implementation. Empirically, it combines large-scale text-as-data analysis with organizational event-study methods to trace how ideological signals articulated at the central level are translated into regulatory standards and embedded in university governance structures, particularly through the expansion of Schools of Marxism. Contents The repository includes: Five curated corpora covering leadership speeches, regulatory standards, ministerial and inter-ministerial policy documents, grassroots university administrative texts, and institutional establishment timelines. Preprocessing and analysis scripts for text cleaning, tokenization, semantic similarity analysis, topic modeling, co-occurrence network construction, and event-study estimation. Baseline outputs used in the main analyses reported in the article. Robustness-check outputs corresponding exclusively to sensitivity analyses reported in Appendix B. Detailed documentation explaining corpus construction, preprocessing decisions, and analytical workflows. Structure and Reproducibility All scripts are modular and named to correspond directly to sections in Appendix A (Data and Methods) and Appendix B (Robustness Checks) of the article.Baseline analyses and robustness analyses are intentionally stored in separate output directories to prevent result contamination. The full analytical workflow can be reproduced by running the main pipeline script (run_all.py) after setting up the required Python environment specified in Appendix A. Corpus 3 contains structured event data (CSV format) and is used exclusively for event-study analysis; all other corpora consist of cleaned textual materials. Scope and Limitations The organizational analysis focuses on 147 “Double First-Class” universities, which represent a core segment of China’s higher education system. While the institutional patterns identified here are robust within this sample, future research may extend the framework to other institutional tiers or national contexts
