Morphometric, reproductive, and body condition data of the Bioko blue duiker (Philantomba monticola)

This dataset contains information from 535 hunted blue duikers (Philantomba monticola melanorheus) collected over a 16-month period (February 2013-May 2014) on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, in two main hunting sites, one of which included three habitat types (lowland, montane, and mossy forest). For each individual (259 females and 276 males), we provide body mass and morphometric measurements, sex, age (estimated from body size and reproductive organ development), reproductive stage (based on macroscopic and microscopic examination of reproductive organs), perirenal fat weight, kidney weight, capture method (trap or gun), and capture locality and date. From these data, we calculated reproductive parameters (pregnancy rates, gross productivity, gross fecundity, interbirth interval) and body condition (Kidney Fat Index, KFI). Using our gross fecundity data and bibliographic information on age at first and last reproduction, we estimated the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rmax) following Cole’s (1954) equation. We also calculated rmax from body mass using Caughley and Krebs’ (1983) formula. Conceptus weights were recorded to estimate fetal age using Huggett and Widdas’ (1951) equation, allowing us to derive conception and birth dates. These data enable analyses of spatial and seasonal variation in reproductive parameters and body condition, as well as differences according to reproductive stage, sex, and age.
