A dynamic model of stage-discharge relations affected by changing discharge

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the dynamic relationship which exists betv:een stage and discharge when the energy slope is variable due to the effects of changing discharge. The model enables either stage or discharge to be computed if the other is specified (measured or predicted) and the channel slope, cross-sectional area and roughness properties are known. The model is tested on several stage discharge relations, which are influenced significantly by changing discharge, and found to provide excellent results. Also presented is a simple and easily-applied graphical procedure to estimate the magnitude of the changing discharge effect on stage-discharge ratings. D.L. Fread.
