Utricularia gibba, the humped bladderwort, is an aquatic carnivorous plant that retains a tiny nuclear genome despite at least two rounds of whole genome duplication since common ancestry with grape and other core eudicot species. Carnivorous plants are interesting model systems not only for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying nutrient acquisition strategies, but also for discovery of the regulatory underpinnings of their novel trapping morphologies. We generated a new de novo genome assembly based on PacBio single-molecule sequencing to address questions on the bladderwort’s genome adaptive landscape.
