In MRI, the radiofrequency (RF) coil is one of the main components for imaging. To improve the image quality in small animal brain, we developed a novel coil combined with a traditional surface coil and a saddle in 3-T MRI. This multi-purposed coil can be configured as enhanced and extended mode to focus the superficial or the deeper region of brain. To evaluate the performance of the multi-purpose coil, we selected two traditional surface coils with different sizes that were used for phantom and in-vivo mouse brain imaging. As the results, the multi-purpose coil revealed better performance in surface and deep region of interest by enhanced and extended mode.
