Bonds were lodged in guarantee of the payment of debts and arose in respect of a particular case; in the case of a death (eg. by the widow) or prior to the departure of the guarantee from the Colony. Prior to 1819 all persons, whether convict or free, were required to obtain clearance from the Governor before leaving the Colony; after that date, clearance was required from the Judge Advocate's Office. In some cases there is no bond but only a letter from the Governor exempting the bearer from the necessity of posting bond. (4/7890). 1 box.
