Origin–destination trade matrices for agricultural products at the country scale over the period 1986–2023

Repository description This repository provides the data and supporting files used to produce the output of the nested algorithm NETFLOW (Semeria et al., 2024, Environmental Research Letters) for processing bilateral trade data. The trade data are reconciled according to the methodology developed by Distefano et al. (2020), which supports the development of the CWASI database (Tamea et al., 2021, 2026). The repository contains the following datasets and supporting materials: Raw production data (1961–2023). Production values, expressed in metric tons, are sourced from FAOSTAT and organized according to the CWASI nomenclature. The data are provided as CSV files in the archive production.zip. List of primary products. The list of primary product items derived from FAOSTAT, stored in the CSV file primary_item_list.csv. Mapping between primary and derived products. The correspondence between primary products and their derived products is provided in the Excel file table_items_prim_derived.xlsx. Origin–destination bilateral trade matrices. These matrices describe bilateral trade flows for primary products, expressed in metric tons of primary equivalent. Each matrix includes production values along the main diagonal, imports along the rows, and exports along the columns. The matrices are provided as .txt files for each crop–year combination covering the period 1986–2023, and are bundled in the archive origin_destination_matrices.zip.
