The microbial communities on electrode surfaces have a large impact on the performance of microbial electrochemical technologies. The factors that shape the microbial communities on the electrodes are poorly understood. This study focuses on obtaining a better understanding of the relationship between deterministic and stochastic factors that influence the microbial community assembly of the anode and cathode communities in microbial electrolysis cells.
