Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), NHERI 2018: Tsunami Generation by Submarine Volcanic Eruptions

Worked alongside Georgia Tech faculty and graduate students at the O.H Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory to conduct an experiment that involved physical modeling of volcanic eruption tsunami generation scenarios. The paper covers the development and results of the experiment, including leading wave parameters and sample plots that illustrate wave behaviors under varying conditions. After running several trials, we collected a sufficient amount of raw data that will undergo a calibration and filtration process. Future goals are collecting our dimensionless parameters for scaling and formulating a predictive equation that can be applied to data from real-world events and improve tsunami inundation maps as well as tsunami forecasting systems.
