De-novo draft genome assembly for Melaleuca alternifolia. The genome of the reference genotype SCU01 was assembled using PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads. M. alternifolia produces volatile terpenoids with antifungal and antimicrobial properties, and is the source of a renowned essential oil (tea tree oil). It has been cultivated and bred in Australia since the 1990's. Because of its economic importance, along with its Eucalyptus and Corymbia spp relatives, M. alternifolia is one of the most extensively studied members of the Myrtaceae family for genetics and biochemistry of terpene biosynthesis.
