资源简介:
In 1883 a Board for the Protection of Aborigines was established by a minute of the Executive Council. The Board met weekly and made recommendations regarding the protection of the State’s Aboriginal population. In 1909, the Board was given statutory power under the Aborigines Protection Act 1909 (Act No.25). The Board’s responsibilities under the Act included the management of reserves, general supervision of the interests and welfare of Aborigines and the distribution of money, blankets and clothing. The Act also provided for the appointment of Local Committees (Local Boards), which worked in conjunction with the Board for the Protection of Aborigines. The Local Committees were required to meet on a monthly basis and to also inspect the reserves and stations under their supervision four times a year. They were to inquire into all complaints made concerning the stations or reserves and to make recommendations for the consideration of the Board as necessary. The Committees had the power to maintain order and discipline, and advised the Board for the Protection of Aborigines regarding the allotment of housing and land. These Committees were also known as Aboriginal Protection Committees and Local Aborigines Committees. This volume contains the minutes of monthly meetings of the Local Committee based at New Angledool. The work carried out by the Committee related primarily to maintaining the local Aboriginal reserve by requesting finance from the Board for the Protection of Aborigines for supplies and to undertake necessary works. The minutes are signed and dated by the Committee’s Chairperson. The volume also contains a letter from the Board for the Protection of Aborigines approving appointment of a member to the Local Committee dated 12 August 1918. At the back of the volume is a postage stamp account for the period 1 December 1914 to 21 August 1915.The volume was transferred to the Archives Authority by the New South Wales Police Department.
