Sequencing Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a member of the family Arteriviridae that has a genome size around 15 kb in length. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the North American PRRSV-2 and European PRRSV-1 species evolved from an unknown Arterivirus progenitor. PRRSV continues to evolve, and new genetic variants emerge and re-emerge routinely throughout the U.S. and Europe, irrespective of whether herds have or do not have previous immunity due to natural infection or live-vaccine. Our goal is to provide a genomic view of PRRSV evolution using biosamples or isolates collected from outbreaks in US swine farms.
