Apollo at The Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario

Apollo was the Greek and Roman god of music, poetry, and prophecy. Long-worshipped in Pompeii, his temple there dates back about 600 years. The god is accompanied by a guardian griffin (part-lion, part-eagle). The marble statue's stiff, old fashioned Greek style indicates that Apollo was worshipped there long before the Romans took over the cult. This object is part of Scan The World.
