Convergenceofknowledgeandtechnologyforthebenefitofsociety(CKTS)isthecoreopportunityforprogressinthe21stcentury.Thisstudysuggestsageneralprocesstoadvancecreativity,innovation,andsocietalprogressbasedonfiveprinciples:(1)theinterdependenceofallcomponentsofnatureandsociety,(2)enhancementofcreativityandinnovationthroughevolutionaryprocessesofconvergencethatcombinesexistingprinciplesanddivergencethatgeneratesnewones,(3)decisionanalysisforresearchanddevelopmentbasedonsystem-logicdeduction,(4)theutilityofhigher-levelcross-domainlanguagestogeneratenewsolutionsandsupporttransferofnewknowledge,and(5)thevalueofvision-inspiredbasicresearchembodiedingrandchallenges.Possiblesolutionsareoutlinedforkeysocietalchallengesinthenextdecade,includingsupportforfoundationalemergingtechnologiestocreatenewindustriesandjobs,improvelifelongwellnessandhumanpotential,achievepersonalizedandintegratedhealthcareandeducation,andsecureasustainablequalityoflifeforall.Thisreportprovidesaten-year"NBIC2"visionwithinalonger-termframeworkforconvergingtechnologyandhumanprogressoutlinedinapreviousstudyofunifyingprinciplesacross“NBIC”fieldsthatbeganwithnanotechnology,biotechnology,informationtechnology,andtechnologiesbasedonandenablingcognitivescience(RocoandBainbridge2003).
